Treatment for Parkinson’s – Deep Brain Stimulation

For those diagnosed with the Parkinson’s Disease, the world may seem dark and hope and dreams might have drifted away.  However, despite not having ways to slow the the disease just yet,, there are options for patients to control and reduce symptoms related to the disease. Today, one of the popular surgical treatments discussed among doctors and patients is deep brain stimulation, or DBS for short.  This treatment involves implanting a thin electrode into the patients motor function region of the brain that are malfunctioning, then sends electrical pulses to stimulate that part to hopefully  improve motor functions of the patient. Although results vary, these treatments are becoming more and more popular in place of other surgical treatments such as pallidotomies and thalamotomies.
